The Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep III Temple Conservation Project

The Colossi of Memnon and Amenhotep III Temple Conservation Project directed by Hourig Sourouzian (since 1998) aims to preserve important remains of the temple of Amenhotep III, which has been destroyed by an earthquake in antiquity, used as a quarry and abandoned. Over 25 years of salvage archaeology and the re-erection of monuments have considerably revived important parts of the temple and enriched our understanding of this reign. Since 2025, the project is co-directed by Kathrin Gabler and coordinated cooperatively between the JGU Mainz and DAIK.

ResearchSpace Deir el-Medina

The pilot project ResearchSpace Deir el-Medina: Documenting the Ancient Egyptian Tomb of the Sculptor Ipuy (TT 217) was funded by the Research Fund Junior Researchers, University of Basel between March 2022 and June 2023. In this period, the project team developped the digital architecture for a new open-access online platform, ResearchSpace Deir el-Medina, that will ultimately allow for the seamless collection, documentation, research, and publication of data from Deir el-Medina using just one tool. TT 217 and its data serve as a test case for the development and first import of this platform. The tomb offers a variety of data, ranging from (digital) archival material to freshly excavated objects (including drawings, photos, and GIS data of these materials), objects stored in museums (and available in their databases), as well as newly-produced files, e.g. 3D models or the combined search within the RS system linked to other databases.

Ancient Sciences Innovation Lab (ASIL)

Das „Ancient Sciences Innovation Lab (ASIL)“ Projekt entwickelt aus einem klassischen Seminarraum mit Foyer in der Hegelstraße 59 an der JGU Mainz ein modernes Raumlabor. Hier werden interdisziplinäre altertumswissenschaftliche Lehr-Lern-Settings innovativ und hybrid transformiert: Die Kombination von moderner Didaktik mit zukunftsorientierter technischer Ausstattung schafft einen einzigartigen Lern-, Lehr-, Forschungs- und Begegnungsraum. Das bis Januar 2025 vom Stifterverband und der Dieter-Schwarz-Stiftung geförderte Projekt wird nun als Initiative von Mitarbeitenden des IAW weitergeführt. TT 217. The Tomb of the Sculptor Ipuy in Context

TT 217, the tomb of the sculptor Ipuy, is one of the rare polychrome tombs in the Western Necropolis of Deir el-Medina. The rock-cut tomb consists of a court and ten chambers, according to Davies 1927. Built in the first half of the reign of Ramesses II, only the first room shows wall paintings with exceptional scenes depicting various professions. Research on the tomb focus on a digital survey and the documentation of the preserved paintings and fragments (high-resolution photos and 3D scans for photogrammetric models), on an epigraphic and iconographic analysis (painters’ hands), and new architectural plans (if all elements are accessible). The project aims for a virtual reconstruction of the decoration (preserving the current condition, relocating fragments digitally, benefitting from historical documents). It seeks to identify further (funerary) objects and to contextualize the microcosmos of the tomb and Ipuy’s family. If possible, scientific analyses of pigments and restoration work may be envisaged.
